Periodontology

Gum Health

Periodontology is a branch examining the soft and hard tissues surrounding the teeth, investigating diseases that occur in these tissues.

Since periodontal diseases can cause tooth loss even though the affected tooth is intact, it is crucial and of utmost importance to protect the teeth’s surrounding soft and hard tissues (gums and alveolar bones) as well as maintaining overall oral health. Because once it looses its supporting tissues there will be nothing to hold the tooth in place.

How does a gum disease even occur in the first place?

Gum disease is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial plaque accumulation on the tooth/root surfaces. The chemicals secreted by bacteria living in the plaque damage the gums and the bone under the tooth. Thus dental diseases develop.

As long as the bacterial plaque is not removed properly, it begins to harden by time exposed to saliva and minerals. Calculus is the name given to that hardened plaque accumulation.

Symptoms of affected inflamed gums are:

• Swelling
• Halitosis (bad breath)
• Gingival bleeding (spontaneous or while brushing)
• Painful gums
• Pus outflow (metallic taste)
• Recession

Treatment is crucial in order to preserve oral health. There are several treatment options such as laser therapy, surgical treatment or nonsurgical initial treatments. After clinical examination the most suitable treatment plan will be established according to your needs.
